29.04.05: TSLM Press Release as follows:
GERALDINE SMITH BLASTS THE NORTHERN BYPASS.
In a letter addressed to Transport Solutions for Lancaster and Morecambe, on the eve of the General Election, local Labour Party Candidate Geraldine Smith has delivered a scathing attack on the Heysham M6 Link proposed Northern Route. She said that the Northern Route is by far the least favourable of the three options originally put out for consultation. She feels that it offers the least opportunity for developing the areas derelict industrial sites and the regeneration of Morecambe. That it does nothing to relieve the internal traffic congestion and that it has the highest adverse environmental impact on the people and communities adjacent to it. " This is a huge blow to the proposal to build the Northern Route", said David Gate, Chairman of TSLM, "more and more people are coming to see that the proposed dual carriageway is highly damaging to the environment and to our communities. Moreover it is obvious that the Northern Route does little or nothing to address our main concern, the in town traffic congestion". " The main objective of our group is to stop the Northern Route, and we intend to work on real long term solutions to our transport problems rather than promote expensive and damaging road proposals. We can now continue to fight the road plans with new enthusiasm and vigour".
