3.3.07: IMPORTANT LINK ROAD INFORMATION

Heysham M6 Link Road Public Inquiry

TSLM is pleased to confirm that the Secretary of State has ‘called in’ Lancashire County Council’s planning application and it will now be decided by a Planning Inspector at an independent public inquiry. The Planning Inspectorate in Bristol is now making the arrangements for the public inquiry. Many people in our district have already received a letter or email from the Planning Inspectorate and/or Lancashire County Council confirming this. Even if you do not receive a letter, do not worry: you can still contribute to the process.

The letters that you wrote to the Government Office for the North West (GONW) had a massive effect in securing the call-in. GONW has passed to the Planning Inspectorate the names & addresses of those who wrote or emailed, but not the letters or emails themselves.

So the Planning Inspectorate has written to say: if there are any matters which you wish to put before the Inspector, would you please write to me at this address....”

Please write again and repeat your objection for the inspector.

To ensure that your views are taken into account it is vital that you respond to the Planning Inspectorate either by letter or by e-mail, before 22 March.

Quote reference APP/Q2371/V/07/1200928 and APP/Q2371/V/07/1200929.

You may send either a letter OR an email, regardless of whether you received a letter or e mail, or even if you received nothing.

Planning Inspectorate’s letter asks for 3 copies, but they have now confirmed that e mails should be sent only once; for letters, if it is difficult to send 3 copies, just send one, and they will photocopy it.

The deadline is 22nd March 2007.

By registering with the Planning Inspectorate in this way, you are simply registering your objection and the reasons why you object. You are not committing yourself to appear at the Public Inquiry. At a later date, people who have registered at this stage will be contacted by Planning Inspectorate, and if you wish you may then say that you want TSLM to represent your views at the inquiry.

TSLM strongly urges everyone who opposes the scheme to register their opposition and the reasons why they oppose it. This material will help the inspector decide on the structure of the public inquiry.

You can be sure that TSLM will present forcefully the case against the Road at the Public Inquiry. We have already taken advice from national experts, and as we build up the detailed case against the scheme we shall call on professional advice, expert witnesses and legal representation as necessary.

Further details of our concerns and arguments are set out here. If you have any questions, we would be pleased to assist you. Contact details are on our website, or write to PO Box 146, Morecambe LA4 6WR

Ideas for your letter:
Here are a few ideas for your objection letter or e mail – or you can simply send the same letter that you sent to GONW in November.

I object to the Heysham M6 Link Northern Route because:

  • It does not address Lancaster & Morecambe’s congestion problems
  • The regeneration claims are flawed and now discredited
  • The public consultation was inadequate
  • It destroys our Green Belt, many veteran trees and protected hedgerows
  • It damages communities and brings noise, air and light pollution to many homes
  • It will increase greenhouse gases, including 24,000 tonnes of CO2 each year
  • It increases the flood risk of the River Lune at Halton
  • It is poor value for money, with escalating costs & exaggerated benefits
  • It does not consider the many sustainable transport alternatives to road building
  • It encourages increased road usage, contrary to government imperatives

The public inquiry has been brought about by the determined action of so many people. It gives you the opportunity to make your views count in the decisions by the inspector. Please take the opportunity to tell him, again, that this is a destructive and underperforming plan which fails the district.
